Nelson-Atkins Museum announces global RFP for ambitious expansion

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City has announced a global request for proposals (RFP) for a 61,000-square-foot expansion, with a submission deadline of October 29 and an estimated construction budget between $160 million and $170 million.

"This expansion reflects our commitment to connecting art with our community," said museum director Julián Zugazagoitia. "We want to create a space that showcases our collection and allows for new exhibitions and programming."

The expansion will include space for educational programs, special exhibitions, and community events. It aims to blend with the museum’s existing structure while enhancing accessibility and creating areas for families and visitors of all ages.

As part of the RFP process, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is inviting architects, designers, and builders worldwide to submit proposals. The selection will prioritize creativity, sustainability, and alignment with the museum's mission and community needs. A panel of museum staff, art historians, and community representatives will review submissions.

The museum plans to host public forums for community input, ensuring the expansion reflects Kansas City's diverse population, while also aiming to strengthen its role as a cultural leader and inspire future generations.

The design competition is being managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) and is open to local, regional, national, and international firms. For more information on the competition, including deadlines and entry requirements, visit https://competitions.malcolmreading.com/nelson-atkins.
