The General Services Administration (GSA) recently celebrated the completion of Building 53 at the Denver Federal Center Campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
JE Dunn Construction led the renovation and repurposing of nearly 200,000 SF, transforming the previously underutilized building into modern office space. This project exemplifies GSA's commitment to decarbonizing the federal infrastructure, improving energy efficiency, reducing costs, and fostering clean energy job creation while enhancing the nation's competitiveness.
The design-build initiative, in collaboration with Gensler, included a complete reroofing, abatement, full interior renovation, and significant upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Tenant spaces were also built out to accommodate the agencies.
“At JE Dunn, we exist to enrich lives through inspired people and places. Our team is proud to have partnered with Gensler and the GSA on the successful modernization of Building 53,” said Joel Pennick, Vice President at JE Dunn.
The newly completed space consolidates five federal agencies, including two U.S. Department of the Interior bureaus, and brings nearly 1,000 employees to the campus. This consolidation eliminates seven private leases and is projected to save taxpayers close to $12 million annually.
“The leadership of the project team was key to the success of Building 53,” said Tammy Quinn, Senior Project Manager at GSA. “Despite challenges like a shift in delivery method, additional abatement requirements, and the impacts of COVID-19, the project was completed just six months behind the original schedule. This success is a testament to the team's unwavering commitment, clear communication, and exceptional project management. JE Dunn’s dedication ensured the project remained on budget and on track, setting a new benchmark for excellence in federal construction projects.”
