Developer Deepak Parmar has big plans for Gardner.
He’s put a plan before the city planning commission, which if approved would add an 82-room Hampton Inn Hotel and 8,200-square-foot conference center to the southeast corner of Cedar Niles Road and East Santa Fe Street. Parmar, principal of Gardner Hospitality LLC, is targeting a fall 2018 opening.
“Gardner is the geographic center of an exploding employment base in Southwest Johnson County, and this hotel project is being proposed in just the right place at just the right time,” Gardner Mayor Chris Morrow said. “Located along I-35 with easy access to New Century Air Center to the north and Logistics Park KC to the south, this project is well positioned to meet growing demand for quality hotel and meeting space.”
The city recognizes that conference meeting space will help attract more business relocations and expansions, as well as economic diversity, says Gardner City Administrator Cheryl Harrison-Lee.
Greg Martinette, president of the Southwest Johnson County EDC, said a lack of nearby hotel and meeting space is a common concern among employers in the region.
“This project will be an important tool in helping the EDC attract and retain business in Southwest Johnson County,” Martinette said. “With companies like Amazon, Kubota and CenturyLink bringing thousands of workers and executives to the area, demand for room nights most certainly will continue to grow.”
If the planning commission approves the project, it will advance to the Federal Aviation Administration and Johnson County Planning Commission for consideration. If the approval process proceeds as expected, a groundbreaking will take place in June or July of 2017.
