Bluhawk breaks ground on $750M multi-sport complex

Bluhawk broke ground on its massive, $750 million indoor sports complex this morning near 159th Street and U.S. 69 Highway in Overland Park, Kan.

The first phase of the multi-sport complex - announced at today’s groundbreaking event as Advent Health Sports Park at Bluhawk - will include four basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, eight pickleball courts, and an indoor turf field for soccer, futsal, baseball, football, rugby and lacrosse. The indoor baseball training areas will include eight batting cages, eight pitching lanes and an infield training area.

The 277-acre mixed-use development, funded both privately and through the use of approximately $55 million in STAR bonds, will be built in two phases anchored by a neighborhood shopping center with an existing grocery store, restaurants and retail.

“The Bluhawk development is on the leading edge of youth and amateur competitive and recreational sports in Kansas City and across the country. Not only will we create meaningful economic impact through sports tournaments and large events, we will (also) offer programs to enhance the health, wellness and recreation opportunities of local athletes, children and families,” said Kent Price, president of Price Brothers, the project’s developer.

The sports complex will offer individual and team training for novice to professional athletes, as well as a variety of programs for participants of all ages: fitness classes, wellness activities, sports medicine, massage, functional training, nutrition and physical therapy.

The venue will provide two on-site food and beverage offerings, family entertainment amenities and e-sports. Bluhawk will also be home to youth and adult amateur hockey leagues, offering one of the area’s only regulation-size ice sheets. Shooting lanes, a passing area, and skate rentals will also be offered on site.

In addition to servicing the growing number of youth hockey players in the area, the ice sheet will also be open for public skating opportunities including programs like skating camps and lessons, stick and puck instruction and open skate times.

Advent Health Sports Park at Bluhawk is expected to open in the fall of 2024 and alone will drive a projected 3.8 million dollars in economic impact through new market sports and spending revenue to Overland Park in its first year of operation, according to a release.

The 3,500-seat arena will be able to host student and family-oriented events such as graduations, state athletic competitions and expos.

VCC is the general contractor for the sports complex; HOK is the architect. Other project partners include: Arvest Bank, Superior Bowen, Olsson, CBRE, Stantec and SFA.
