AIA awards design excellence in KC area projects

The American Institute of Architects Kansas City chapter recently honored 13 projects in six categories at its 2016 Design Excellence Awards Program. A distinguished jury from Baltimore was assembled and judged submissions in architecture, interior architecture, and concept.

University of Kansas DeBruce Center

A museum/student commons hybrid on the Lawrence, Kan., campus, the DeBruce Center serves as a permanent home for the two-page document from 1891 on which James Naismith outlined "The Original 13 Rules of Basket Ball."

1743 Madison

Located in Kansas City, Mo., and designed by el dorado inc., 1743 Madison deploys a courtyard plan within a sloped site, leveraging natural ventilation, natural daylighting and energy efficiency to create comfortable spaces for family dwelling.

KC Police Department HQ

This renovation project had to re-position the facility for another 70 years of community service while respecting the character of the historic structure. The addition includes a new building core and a "community room" that enhances the visibility of the department.

Westport Presbyterian Church

A beautiful new church rises from the ruins of the historic structure that was destroyed by a catastrophic fire. The new church is delicately sited within the rough-cut stone walls, a complement to the original Romanesque Revival building.

Downtown Kansas City Recycling System Vision Study

The purpose of the project was to generate a comprehensive vision study for the recycling system for the downtown area which would center on an urban design perspective aimed at integrating recycling into public realm as its physical and programmatic attribute, and a constituting element of its aggregate design quality.
