Canary, Westport’s dazzling new bistro and cocktail lounge that recently opened in The Netherlands Building, will soon unveil their 11th floor ‘bohemian chic’ rooftop bar with expansive views of downtown Kansas City, Westport and the Country Club Plaza.
Located at 3835 Main St. in Kansas City, Mo. along the planned streetcar expansion route, the rooftop bar is aiming for an early May opening date, while work is also currently underway to create an intimate outdoor space for expanded alleyway seating.
Home to expertly crafted cocktails and modern American cuisine, Canary is the second concept for the local husband-and-wife team, Beau Williams and Keely Edgington, who also own Julep Cocktail Club in historic Westport.
The name ‘Canary’ was inspired by local history as it was the name (and color) of the first airplane purchased by Atchison, Kan. native and famed pioneer pilot, Amelia Earhart.
Featuring interior design by Amiglia Design Group, the space incorporates classic Art Deco details and modern finishes as a nod to the era of the original structure built in 1927.
Suspended elegantly above the bar and below a gold gilded ceiling, the main focal points of the space are three cascading tear-drop chandeliers made of aged glass, whose illumination is magnified by frosted mirrors behind the bar which reflect the dimmer-controlled lighting.
Modern day 3D printing was used to create Prairie Style trim moldings which accentuate the columns. Seating options are plush with velvet chairs, leather couches, and banquette-style seating highlighted by a richly-textured metallic wallpaper backdrop.
“Canary’s interior design exudes a romantic and glamorous vibe with a style that fulfills the owners’ vision as ‘modern with a nod to the past’,” said Amy Migliazzo, designer with Amiglia Design Group.
Exact Partners owns the Canary as well as the entire building.
“It’s so exciting to work with a group of people who care about the footprint of the building in Kansas City’s history and have invested in the process of historic preservation. It’s turned out so beautifully, and we’re so close to finalizing design elements for the rooftop bar opening in early May. It’s going to be a fun place to be.”
