MWM: Congratulations on 50 years! Can you share the story of how Seal-O-Matic Paving was founded?

Max Jaben: Seal-O-Matic Paving was founded in 1974 by my grandfather, Jerry Jaben, and a partner with a vision to provide asphalt maintenance services. They started with a small team and a few pieces of equipment, driven by a commitment to excellence and a customer-centric approach. My father, Mike Jaben, took ownership in the late '80s and became the sole owner in 2000.

For as long as I can remember, I would ride with my dad to check job sites, listening to him talk business on the phone. If I was lucky, Iā€™d catch him tying up his boots in the garage before heading off to work during the school week. At that time, both of my uncles also worked for the company so whenever our family got together the conversation always revolved around asphalt.

I've witnessed many hardworking laborers, operators, foremen, superintendents, estimators, and office staff pour all their effort into the company. Over the years, thanks to their dedication, Seal-O-Matic has grown significantly, becoming a trusted name in the Kansas City paving industry.

MWM: Can you describe a pivotal moment in the company's history that significantly contributed to its growth?

Max Jaben: Building Town Center Plaza in Leawood, Kansas in the 90s elevated Seal-O-Matic Paving Company by showcasing our expertise on a high-profile project. We performed and contracted everything five feet outside of the vertical building. This project demonstrated our capability to handle large-scale commercial work, increased our credibility, and provided valuable opportunities leading to future business growth and community recognition.

MWM: What were some of the company's biggest challenges in its early years, and how did you overcome them?

Max Jaben: In the early years, one of the biggest challenges was establishing a reputation in a competitive market. The company overcame this by focusing on delivering quality work and building strong relationships with clients. Additionally, navigating economic fluctuations required careful financial planning and strategic decision-making to ensure steady growth.

MWM: How has the paving industry changed over the past five decades, and how has Seal-O-Matic Paving adapted to these changes?

The paving industry has seen significant advancements in technology, materials, and methods over the past five decades. Seal-O-Matic Paving has adapted by continuously investing in state-of-the-art equipment and adopting innovative techniques. The company has also emphasized ongoing training for its workforce to stay ahead of industry trends and provide the best possible service to clients.

MWM: Can you share a memorable project or milestone that stands out in the company's 50-year history?

Max Jaben: We have paved at the National World War I Museum and Memorial, the Chiefs' stadium, and recently the KC Current's practice facility and stadium at the Riverfront. Additionally, we have paved many Amazon logistics facilities and are currently paving at the American Royal in KCK.

MWM: How has the company's approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility evolved over the years?

Max Jaben: Seal-O-Matic Paving has progressively integrated sustainability and environmental responsibility into its operations. The company has adopted eco-friendly materials and practices, such as recycling asphalt and using energy-efficient machinery. Initiatives to minimize waste and reduce the carbon footprint have been implemented, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

MWM: What are your plans and visions for the future of Seal-O-Matic Paving as you look ahead to the next 50 years?

Max Jaben: Looking ahead, Seal-O-Matic Paving plans to continue embracing innovation and technological advancements to enhance service delivery. The company aims to expand its service offerings while maintaining a focus on sustainability and community engagement. Building on its strong foundation, Seal-O-Matic Paving envisions a future of continued growth, excellence, and positive impact on the industry and the communities it serves.
